If you’re planning a deep sea fishing trip in Playa Sámara, Costa Rica, one of the most common questions is: what gear do you really need for offshore fishing?
To target species like Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and others, you need strong, technical, and reliable equipment.
In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know, whether you’re a curious beginner or an experienced angler looking for a challenge.
Why Does Gear Matter So Much?
Deep sea fishing is nothing like casting from a lake shore or beach. The fish are big, fast, and incredibly powerful.
A marlin can weigh over 200 kg, a tuna pulls like a truck, and a sailfish launches out of the water like a missile.
The wrong gear = broken equipment + lost fish + ruined experience.
That’s why, on board our charters, we only use tested, professional-grade equipment and guide you step by step—even if it’s your first time on the water.
What Do You Really Need for Offshore Fishing in Costa Rica?
Here’s an overview of the gear we use daily on our tours departing from Playa Sámara.
Fishing Rods
Offshore rods must be:
- Strong yet flexible, to absorb sudden runs
- Rated for 30–80 lb lines (13–36 kg), depending on the target species
For marlin: we use rods rated 50–80 lb (22–36 kg)
For sailfish and mahi mahi: 30–50 lb (13–22 kg) is plenty
On board, you’ll find top-tier rods from trusted international brands.
Reels
The reel is the heart of your setup. It must provide:
- Smooth, powerful drag during the fight
- A precise braking system to withstand hard strikes
- The capacity to hold hundreds of meters of line
A quality reel makes all the difference when a fish dives deep. With a cheap one… you lose everything.
Fishing Line
Depending on the species, we use:
- Monofilament: stretchier, ideal for the leaps of a sailfish
- Braided line: thinner and stronger, better for marlin
Every line is carefully inspected before each trip to ensure maximum safety and performance.
Hooks and Leaders
We primarily use:
- Circle Hooks: perfect for catch & release, reduce harm to the fish
- Fluorocarbon leaders: nearly invisible underwater and highly resistant
Bait: Live, Dead, and Artificial
To attract big game fish, you need effective bait. We use:
- Live bait: sardines, bonito, mackerel (great for marlin and tuna)
- Prepared dead bait: rigged ballyhoo, carefully tested and mounted
- Artificial lures: skirted lures, poppers, colorful stickbaits
Each trip is planned based on target species and sea/weather conditions.
