If you’re passionate about sportfishing and considering Costa Rica for your next adventure, here’s something you absolutely need to know: Playa Sámara is one of the best areas for catching Marlin and Sailfish. The warm, nutrient-rich waters of the Pacific provide ideal conditions for offshore fishing.
But how can you increase your chances of a close encounter with these giants of the sea?
In this article, we share the best fishing techniques for targeting Marlin and Sailfish, based on the real-world experience of our Gladiator Sport Fishing team, out on the waters of Sámara every day.
Why Are Marlin and Sailfish So Special?
Black, blue, or striped marlin, as well as sailfish, are among the most sought-after predators in the world of sportfishing, for two main reasons:
- Power and speed: Both species can reach speeds over 100 km/h and put up a fight that lasts more than an hour.
- Spectacle: They deliver acrobatic jumps, sudden runs, and unforgettable battles.
Without a doubt, they represent the ultimate challenge for any angler seeking adrenaline and reward in the open ocean.
When Is the Best Time to Fish Them in Playa Sámara?
They’re present year-round, but more commonly caught between December and April.
Playa Sámara is lucky: thanks to the proximity of the Nicoya Trench, deep-sea fishing grounds are just a short ride away, and the action can begin within an hour of departure.
The Best Techniques for Catching Marlin and Sailfish
Trolling with Live or Artificial Baits
The most common and effective technique for catching these giants. The boat cruises slowly (5–9 knots), pulling a spread of live baits (e.g. bonito, mackerel) or skirted artificial lures, each mounted on separate rods.
Gladiator tip:
“The secret lies in the combination of color and movement. For sailfish, we use lighter colors like blue, white, or pink. For marlin, we prefer deeper, darker shades like black and purple. And when a fish strikes… get ready for a real battle!”
Why it works: These are visual predators, and trolling simulates a wounded prey—an irresistible trigger.
Kite Fishing
A visually stunning and highly effective technique, especially in calm seas.
A special kite suspends the live bait just above the water’s surface. The frantic movement of the bait attracts sailfish, who strike aggressively.
Ideal for targeting sailfish on flat, quiet days when trolling is less productive.
Gladiator tip:
“Kite fishing is a dance. It requires coordination, patience, and precision. But when the sailfish bursts from the water… it’s pure magic.”
Live Bait Drifting
Perfect for when you spot bait schools or active areas.
The boat is left to drift naturally, while live bait is deployed at various depths.
An excellent technique for probing zones where marlin are patrolling in search of food.
Teaser & Switch (Combined Technique)
Widely used in catch & release practices. The goal is to trigger an attack and get the fish to strike the “right” rod.
Unarmed teasers are trolled behind the boat to attract marlin or sailfish. When the fish approaches, the teaser is pulled away and replaced with a live bait cast on the angler’s line.
This is the ideal technique for responsible sportfishing, minimizing harm to the fish and used frequently in tournaments.
Fishing at Sunrise and Sunset
Not exactly a technique, but a golden tip:
The hour before sunrise and after 4:00 p.m. are often the most productive.
Fewer boats, cooler temperatures, and more action.

At Gladiator Sport Fishing, we promote sustainable fishing practices, with a strong focus on catch & release:
